Artist painter
David considers himself an autodidact in that he has had no formal training or guidance in the art of painting, besides the basic arts lessons, which he received at school.
At a young age he was very impressed by an encyclopaedia of renaissance painters. When asked what he would become later in life, David always replied artist painter.
It was only in 1988, when taking some time off and renovating a newly purchased apartment in South Africa, that David did his first painting.
David created a man’s profile on a piece of wood (taken from the renovation debris of the apartment) and produced a stunning likeness.
Convinced that the outcome was a chance accident he didn’t paint again for over a year. However, when asked by a friend to paint a portrait of a famous opera star, David agreed. It was at this point that he realized that painting had taken a hold of him. From his first adventures using fast drying industrial paints, David slowly progressed to oil paints. He knew this was his chosen medium when he felt a therapeutic calmness come over him while moulding and blending the pigments together. Painting was the perfect anti-dote to the hectic life style and physical challenges, which he endures while practicing his other profession as a dancer.
David’s painting therapy turned into a personal passion, which keeps being influenced and fuelled by his continuing career as a performing artist.
David’s paintings are mostly portraits and figurative in nature.
“I have absolutely no secret message to convey in my work, they speak for themselves,” says David, the artist painter.
