Romantic love in ‘Wuthering Heights’

A contemporary version of ‘Wuthering Heights’ will be performed in English by Theater Artemis on Sunday, 15 January in Theater aan het Spui.

The novel Wuthering Heights (1847) by the British novelist Emily Brontë has inspired numerous films, plays, and songs. The dark, romantic love story of Heathcliff and Catherine, set on the mystical and wild Yorkshire Moors, still exerts an appeal across the generations.
Director Floor Huygen and writer Jeroen Olyslaegers have tackled one of the most widely read English classics and moulded it into a powerful theatre play for audiences of many ages (13 years to adult). A cast of six young actors are bathed in a gothic atmosphere, venting extreme emotions, wielding passion and revenge, tormented by unfulfilled lust, unease and pain.

Cathy is still a child when the outcast Heathcliff appears and she has grown into a young woman when she is torn apart by her love for two men. She falls on turbulent times filled with intrigue, love, a devastating naiveté and a relentless revenge. In ‘Wuthering Heights’, every character seems inevitably self-destructive.

In 2010 this stage version of ‘Wuthering Heights’ received both a Silver and a Gold Cricket award (for best stage performance and best production for children and young people) and it was selected for the Nederlands Theater Festival as one of the ten highlights of the season.
